A Guide to Healthier Snacking

There is nothing better than having a wee bag of crisps or a bar of chocolate throughout the day. Everyone has something that they love to snack on. But sometimes it can be too unhealthy and we can start to over snack and become out of shape. This small guide to healthier snacking will show some tips and tricks that you can use for a more nutritious bite. So read the list below and get swapping your Wispa for a watermelon.

1.      Chew For Longer

Even we will admit that this one sounds made up. But studies have found that people that chew on their food for longer often feel fuller throughout the day than those who don’t. The study was done with almonds and people that chewed on them more than forty times went longer throughout the day without a snack.

2.      Citrus Snacks

Having citrus throughout the day is more likely to make you lose weight. One study found that people that had grapefruit with every meal lost around three and a half pounds in a 3 month period. This is because it helps us manage our appetite through reduced insulin levels – according to researchers.

3.      Protein/Carb Combo

Pairing protein-rich foods with carbohydrates can help your snacking. Foods such as chickpeas are rich in both. The carbs in the food will help fuel the body and the brain while the protein helps fill you up as it breaks down much slower in the body.

4.      Frozen Grapes

A healthier snack to have is frozen grapes. Because the grape is cold it means that your body savours them slower meaning that you won’t eat as much. Researchers have also found that eating more slowly helps you cut down on consumption as the body cannot register how full you are.

5.      Treat Yourself

Having one treat a day will not hinder your healthier lifestyle. If you enjoy a small chocolate bar or glass of wine then have one a day. Everything is good in moderation. Research in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association has found that it may even help us lose weight.

6.      Smarter Snacking

Healthy snacking can also be affected by the situation you are in. If you are munching away as you laze about watching TV then you won’t get healthier. Studies have found that people that eat meals without distractions find themselves more satisfied and eating less throughout the day.

7.      Healthier Snacking: Fill the Gaps

Use snacks as a way to fill the gaps in your diet. If you think that you don’t get enough fruit or vegetables with your meals then snack on them! Carrot sticks, apples, melon and the list goes on are all healthy, delicious snacks. They a great substitute for making you’re snacking much healthier!
